The Furniture and Decorative Woodwork of the House of Parliament

“In regard to the furniture and other interior design fixtures and fittings, it should be noted that – with the exception of a few pieces – they all were made in Hungary. The mahogany, walnut and oak wood ceilings and wall panels in most of the rooms on the main floor merit particular attention, as do the bronze chandeliers, wall lamps and carpets. The latter were commissioned to give a boost to Hungary’s struggling carpet industry, a decision that turned out to be clearly beneficial. The brightest and most exquisitely furnished room is the Prime Minister’s study, which commanded much well-deserved attention when displayed at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Its mahogany ceiling and wooden panels, polished mahogany furniture adorned with majolica ornaments, green leather upholstery, a fireplace with a magnificent forged bronze clock case and candlesticks, along with the rest of the decorative pieces, give a lasting impression of modest grandeur and harmony without being overwhelming with superfluous extravagance, which would not accord with the purpose of the room. The carpentry works in the study were made by Endre Thék, while the bronze fireplace decorations were sourced from Gyula Jungfer’s workshop.” /Béla Pilisi-Neÿ: The Hungarian House of Parliament, 1905/
