Decorative Folk Elements in the House of Parliament

Decorative Folk Elements in the House of Parliament

The rural lifestyle and decorative folk art provided a rich vein of inspiration, new themes and ideas for the fine and applied arts to produce prominent works of national representation. The Hungarian puszta, horse herders, traditional handicraft objects, decorative folk art and the typical folk costumes of various regions served as ample inspiration for the establishment of the “Hungarian style”. As a result, during the construction of the House of Parliament, the interior design, sculptures, furniture, paintings and their ornamentation also introduced Hungarian motifs typical of the late 19th century, bearing the hallmarks of a unique national character. The onnection between the House of Parliament and folk culture can be presented through a variety of themes, as well as specific objects and collections. In many cases, these are featured as ornaments or additional motifs on paintings and sculptures. This volume investigates these aspects of the building, presenting readers with the details that are particularly interesting or important.
